Product Designer (Intern or Student)

Barcelona, February 17th, 2006. ]project-open[ is looking for an intern or student (pursuing a term of final thesis) who would help us to develop a new look and feel for our products.

About the Company

]project-open[ is a Spanish software company founded by German engineers living in Barcelona. We are the main developers of the open-source based ]project-open[ family of products.

Job Description

Within the 2-4 month of your assignment you will work autonomously within a team:

  • Analyze and identify the emotional needs of ]project-open[ users. We will provide you direct contact to our key customers.
  • Benchmark competing products and analyze their strength and weeknesses.
  • Develop a concept for a new product design and
  • Create atleast two implementations of your concept.

Successful candidates will be proactive and capable of appying knowledge from a wide range of subject areas to tackle practical challenges.

What we expect from you:

  • Exposure to psychology and marketing theory:
You will need these tools in order to identify the needs of the different groups of the product's users.
  • Initiative and proactive behavior:
You are in charge to plan and launch activities and ask for support from the rest of the team, not the other way around.
  • Language skills:
You need to be able to communicate in English and Spanish.
  • You don't need to be a programmer. You don't even have to know about Flash and all the other fancy web design tools. However, you will have to know Photoshop or a similar way to implement your concepts.
  • Availability:
Your assignment here will last at least 2-4 month.
  • Before you contact us, please read this article and tell us what you think about it.

The Cons

We are a small team with limited resources in a startup environment, so we won't be able to pay much.

The Pros

However, we can at least partly compensate this by an interesting environment and a pleasant location (right in the center of Barcelona in a nice office located some 1000m from the beach).

You would work in an international environment with strong ties to universities (ESADE Business School and La Salle Technical University), and high public exposure (the projects web site has received some 250.000 distinguished visits in the last 18month). You would gain experience in international product design only comparable to an environment in a much larger multinational company.

In this environment you will be able to really make a change. The fruits of you product design will are visited very week by several hundered of users.
